What is peat free compost?

Peat-free compost is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional compost, created without using peat. Instead, it’s made from natural materials like wood chips, bark, coconut fibres and recycled garden waste. This type of compost helps protect the environment by avoiding peat extraction, which can damage sensitive ecosystems.

Why is peat no longer used in compost?

Peat has fallen out of favour in compost because its harvesting harms delicate ecosystems that take thousands of years to form. Peatlands store vast amounts of carbon, and digging them up releases this carbon, fuelling climate change. Since peat regenerates extremely slowly, it’s seen as a non-renewable resource. Avoiding peat helps protect biodiversity, maintain natural water systems and reduce environmental damage, making compost more sustainable and better for the planet.

What plants thrive in peat free compost?

Peat-free compost supports a variety of plants, especially those with specific needs like acid-loving species, such as rhododendrons and blueberries, which thrive in specially formulated ericaceous mixes. It’s also ideal for starting seeds and cuttings, thanks to its light texture and excellent drainage. While peat-free compost can sometimes appear dry on the surface, it often retains moisture underneath, so overwatering can be a bigger risk than underwatering.
